About

Welcome to Ceramics Project.

Amy Sargeant received her BFA in Craft from the Oregon College of Art and Craft majoring in ceramics and fibers. While at OCAC, Amy learned attention to detail through craftsmanship, and developed a love for artmaking. Amy then moved to London to pursue her Master’s degree in Design Studies from the top-ranked art school Central St. Martin’s College of Art and Design, University of the Arts London, where she focused on arts writing, curation and broadening her theoretical approach to artmaking.

For the past twelve years, Amy has taught within several universities and private art colleges beginning at Portland State University and Pacific Northwest College of Art in Portland, Oregon before moving to California and teaching at Cal State University Fullerton as well as Chapman University, here in Orange, California.

In addition to her years of teaching, Amy has two children who teach her every day about the connection between learning and teaching, life and balance and passion to pursue what really matters, which is why she began The Ceramics Project at The Treasury.

At The Ceramics Project, you will find a variety of classes and workshops for adults (anything with ‘Sip and…’ indicates that wine as well as non-alcoholic beverages will be offered as a part of the experience!) including pottery on the wheel workshops, handbuilt projects as well as classes and workshops devoted to using artmaking as a mindfulness stress reduction practice. Frequent children’s classes, family classes and custom classes for events and parties will also be offered.

All ages and all abilities will be welcomed at The Ceramics Project. Check out the workshop and events calendar for something that’s right for you!

Mindfulness

Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction Through Creativity

After hiding my own struggle with anxiety for most of my life, I began talking about it in the classroom and found that the majority of my students could identify with some level of extreme stress, whether it be anxiety or depression or simply feeling overwhelmed and unhappy. I began studying MBSR (Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction) and realised that simple actions of bringing creativity into my everyday life, lowered my general level of stress and anxiety.

Through artmaking, my hands are able to do the work, allowing my brain to take a rest from cycling through the never-ending list of daily stressors. While all artmaking allows for this ‘destressor phenomenon’, ceramics in particular, at any skill level, has been found to significantly lower cortisol levels after just 45 minutes of art creation!

Here are a few of my favorite recent articles that highlight Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction through Creativity:
